Keeping your dog cool during Summer
I am sure we can all agree that it has been an exceptionally hot summer so far. Swimming pools, iced drinks and aircons are just a few awesome means of keeping cool during the stifling heat; unfortunately it isn’t so easy for our furry friends. Breeds that originate from hot climates, such as Beagles or Dalmatians generally manage very well in hot weather, as well as High-speed hounds such as Greyhounds and Whippets, due to their large hearts and lungs being able to efficiently distribute oxygen throughout their bodies and their long snouts cooling the air as they breathe.

Some breeds don’t manage hot weather, especially snub-nosed (bracycephalic) breeds such as Boston terriers, Pugs, and Bulldogs. Their short nasal passages make it difficult to regulate their temperatures.
It is important to always check for signs of heatstroke or dehydration.

Signs of heatstroke

  • Rapid panting/breathing
  • Excessive salivation
  • Staggering
  • Muscle tremors
  • Raised temperature
  • Fatigue

Signs of Dehydration

  • Dry Mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Sunken eyes
  • Pinch a fold in the skin at the top of the neck and observe whether or not it is slow to snap back

Tips for Keeping your Dog cool

Water and shade

Make sure your dog has access to plenty of cool water and shade. Make sure their water bowls are not left in the sun, if your garden does not offer a lot of natural shade; consider putting up a gazebo or beach umbrella.

Treats

Freeze some chicken broth with a few of your dogs favourite treats mixed in, this is an awesome way to help your dog cool down.

Grooming

If your dog has long hair, make sure to remove any tangles, this will help keep him cool. Be careful when shaving long haired dogs as their double coat acts as insulation and is important for sun protection.

Exercise

Only exercise your dog early in the morning or late at night, these are the coolest parts of the day. Always put your hand on the tar for ten seconds. If it is too hot for your hand it is too hot for your dog’s paws. Consider replacing your daily walk for a swim which is excellent exercise for your dog.
Other ways to cool your dog
Consider filling a plastic shell with water and leaving it in the shade, many dogs love to lie in the water and cool down. Dogs cool from bottom to top so it is a good idea to wet your dog’s tummy and paws or lay a damp towel on the floor for your dog to lie on.
